Ortenburg Ruins
In Baldramsdorf in the direction of Unterhaus (Marhube) are the Ortenburg Ruins (free entry).
The first nobleman from the famous Ortenburger dynasty was Adalbert, steward of the Freisinger estates. He began the building of the Ortenburg at present-day Unterhaus. Count Otto completed the building in 1140 and named it "von Ortenburg".
The Ortenburgers were soon one of the most famous noble families in Carinthia. Count Gabriel of Salamanca, as the successor to the Ortenburgers, built Porcia Castle in Spittal. No attention was paid to the older Ortenburg and the ravages of time began to take their toll.
In 1687 a storm and an earthquake caused large-scale damage and the once mighty castle became a ruin. It remained hidden in the forest for many years, until the association, "Helpers of Ortenburg - 1st Carinthian Museum of Handcrafts" (founded in 1976) renovated it and made it stable and safe to enter. The inner court is now used as a wonderful backdrop for various events.
