Lake Millstätter See Alpine Trail

„These gems have life in them: their colors speak, say what words fail of.“- George Eliot

Hidden and visible gems are waiting to be discovered along the Lake Millstätter See Alpine Trail. Precious stones, ruby red garnets, accompany hikers along their hiking tours. These garnets are often embedded in Glimmerschiffer, a silver-shining rock. Noah already used a lantern made of Garnet to steer his ark safely through the dark night. The Egyptians, Greeks and Romans adorned themselves with the deep red shining precious stone. In the Middle Ages, the garnet – as the “Bohemian Garnet” - adorned the noble heads of Europe.

The alpine trail is not only lined with garnets but also with other stones full of history. These stones create the most beautiful places of Lake Millstätter See: stones like “Pechsteine” (pitch stones), supposed to have been used for pitch mining, „Steinerne Tische“ (stone tables), supposed to have been used for pagan rituals, or monoliths, which will guide your way to Mount Mirnock.

Lake Millstätter See is the centre of Carinthia’s mountain world, surrounded by the Gailtaleralpen, the Hohen Tauern, and the Nockberge National Park – hikers indulge in all types of alpine hiking in terms of Mountain Encounters. The Alpine Trail, 600 – 2,200 m above sea level, connects the mountain world around the lake with the help of eight hiking routes and a number of alternative routes. Walk from peak to peak in eight days, altitude difference 6,000 m: from the world of the 3,000-meter peaks in the West, across the Millstätter See Alpe to Mount Mirnock in the East. The way up to Mount Mirnock is characterised by mystical places and places of power. The last few metres up to the peak lead up the 30 steps of the Scala Paradisi (Ladder of Paradise), nestled into mountain scenery.
