The return of the cattle from the mountain pastures - Almabtrieb
A Traditional Carinthian Celebration
The return of the cattle from the mountain pastures, in other words the Almabtrieb, is a major farm event in autumn. The cattle is decorated colourfully and is then brought back to the valley. The headdress of the cattle consists, for example, of fir-tree green, alpine flowers, and mirrors. A string of bells decorates the neck of the cattle. It is said that the peal of the bells keeps away demons. The cattle is brought back into the stables, and around Pentecost (Pfingsten) it returns to the alpine pastures.
The most beautiful "Almabtieb" in Carinthia
The return of the cattle from the mountain pastures in Treffling is one of the most beautiful in Carinthia. Each year in september the colorfully decorated cattle returns to the valley: the festive procession leads from the Hansbauer hut, through Treffling, to the castle "Burg Sommeregg".
